Amazon Unveils Self-Driving Taxi in Latest Bid to Compete in EV Market

It appears that the world’s two richest billionaires are about to give each other a run for their money, as Amazon has now also joined the self-driving electric vehicle market.

On Monday, Amazon’s autonomous vehicle company, Zoox, revealed more details surrounding its fully-autonomous, electric vehicle that is specifically designed for ride hailing. The latest 4-passenger robotaxi has no room for a driver let alone a steering wheel, with occupants instead facing each other in the “carriage-style” car. However, there are several features that differ from those offered by its rivals including GM’s Cruise, Alphabet’s Waymo, and Tesla: Zoox’s robotaxi comes equipped with four-wheel steering and bidirectional driving capabilities, which means it is able to maneuver in compact spaces without the use of reverse.

The fully-autonomous vehicle also comes equipped with numerous cameras, radars, and sensors, which give the car a full 270-degree view of the road. The robotaxi will also be able to travel up to 16 hours on a single charge, while reaching speeds of up to 75 miles per hour. The predominant use of the vehicle will be for ride-hailing in urban environments, and is already being tested in San Francisco and Foster City, California, as well as Las Vegas, Nevada. In the near future, Zoox also has plans to launch an app for the ride-haling service.
