Home Depot Ends Marijuana Testing for Most Employees

Home Depot Inc (NYSE: HD), one of America’s largest employers, plans to remove marijuana from its drug screening panels and discontinue pre-employment drug testing for the majority of its workforce. The changes, set to take effect on September 1, 2024, were outlined in a human resources memo obtained by Marijuana Moment.

According to the document, cannabis will be eliminated from all drug panels in the United States, including tests conducted after workplace accidents or when there’s reasonable suspicion of employee impairment. The new policy will maintain pre-employment drug testing only for external candidates with contingent offers in Asset Protection and Corporate Security roles. However, employees regulated by the federal Department of Transportation will not be affected by these changes.

Home Depot, which employs over 400,000 associates across more than 2,000 US stores, said in the memo that they continuously evaluate their policies, external environment, and industry benchmarks to remain competitive while complying with local, state, and federal laws.

This move aligns Home Depot with a growing trend among large corporations reconsidering their stance on cannabis use. In 2021, Amazon made headlines by announcing the end of marijuana testing for many of its workers and pledged to lobby for federal cannabis legalization.
