Conservative Lead Shrinks Among Young Canadians as Liberals Gain Ground

The latest national survey from Abacus Data reveals a shifting political landscape among young Canadian voters aged 18 to 29. While the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) maintains an overall lead in the polls, their advantage has narrowed significantly among this demographic.

According to the survey conducted from May 16 to 21, 2024, the Conservatives garnered 32% support among 18-29-year-olds, followed closely by the Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) at 28%. The New Democratic Party (NDP) captured 22% of the youth vote, with the Bloc Québécois (BQ), Green Party of Canada (GPC), and People’s Party of Canada (PPC) trailing at 6%, 5%, and 5% respectively.

This marks a notable shift from the previous month’s survey, which saw the Conservatives leading the Liberals by 23 points among young voters. The narrowing gap suggests that the Liberals are regaining ground with this crucial demographic.

Abacus Data CEO David Coletto noted, “This is the second survey in a row where we’ve seen higher Liberal support among younger Canadians compared to the past five months. It’s a trend worth watching as the youth vote could play a pivotal role in the next federal election.”

The survey also delved into Canadians’ expectations and desires for a hypothetical Conservative government led by Pierre Poilievre. While eliminating the national carbon tax emerged as the most anticipated policy move, young voters expressed concerns about potential changes to immigration levels, abortion access, and the national childcare and dental care programs.
