Conservatives Call for Action Following Court Ruling Against Trudeau’s Use of the Emergencies Act

In response to the Federal Court’s ruling that the Trudeau government’s use of the Emergencies Act in 2022 was illegal and unconstitutional, members of the Conservative party on the Justice Committee have called for immediate action.

MPs Rob Moore, Larry Brock, Tako van Popta, Frank Caputo, Randall Garrison, and Rhéal Éloi Fortin have requested the reconvening of the Special Joint Committee on the Declaration of Emergency to investigate the government’s decision-making process in invoking the Act.

“The court ruling officially confirms that, by employing the Emergencies Act, the Trudeau government broke the law and treated the rights and freedoms of Canadians as expendable,” the Conservative MPs wrote.

The court’s decision has raised significant concerns over the Trudeau administration’s legal authority and justification for employing such drastic measures under the Emergencies Act. Therefore, the members are “calling on the Committee to be immediately recalled in order to address the Federal Court’s ruling that the February 2022 invocation of the Emergencies Act was illegal and unconstitutional.”

This Act, invoked during a period of perceived national crisis, led to controversial actions like freezing bank accounts and authorizing arrests for protest participation.

Earlier this week, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland emphasized that the decision to invoke the Emergencies Act was made to safeguard the public safety of Canadians, citing threats to national security and economic stability.
