Did Elon Musk Steal the ‘Grok’ Name from Ex-Girlfriend Grimes?

Artist and musician Grimes has partnered with toy company Curio to introduce “Grok,” an interactive AI toy designed for young children. Shaped like a plush rocketship, Grok allows kids to engage in conversations, ask questions, and immerse themselves in imaginative play. And while its launch comes over a month after ex-boyfriend Elon Musk’s beleaguered Grok AI, it actually had the name first.

The trademark for the name is owned by Curio, and as Threads user Esqueer points out, Curio’s trademark was filed a full month before xAI filed its trademark for the chatbot.

The toymaker told the Washington Post that the name came from Grimes, real name Claire Boucher, and mother of three of Musk’s younger children: 3-year-old X, and 1-year-olds Y and Tau.

Grok is a shortened version of the word grocket, a name that was “coined because Grimes’ children are exposed to a lot of rockets through their father’s ownership of SpaceX.”

Grimes and Musk are currently engaged in a custody battle, but they haven’t settled yet on where they should sue each other for it. Musk has filed a motion to suspend public access to documents in the case.
