Fewer People Feel Proud To Be Canadian Today Than In 2019

Oh no, Canada. A recent poll conducted by Leger reveals that fewer people feel proud to be Canadian. The survey, which included 1,607 Canadians and 1,003 Americans, shows that while 76% of Canadians consider themselves proud of their nationality, there has been a significant decline in overall pride compared to five years ago.

The poll indicates that 45% of respondents feel less proud to be Canadian than they did in 2019, marking a 16 percentage point increase from a similar survey conducted in 2021. Factors contributing to national pride include Canada’s natural beauty, universal healthcare, and values such as freedom and equality.

However, ongoing issues in the healthcare system, including long wait times and doctor shortages, have emerged as major concerns. Economic inequality and poverty were cited as the top factors diminishing national pride, followed closely by healthcare challenges and dissatisfaction with the current federal government.

Not surprisingly, political affiliation appeared to play a role in levels of national pride among the respondents. Conservative voters reported feeling less proud of their Canadian identity compared to five years ago, with 65% expressing this sentiment. In contrast, only 26% of Liberal voters shared this view.

The poll also revealed regional variations, with the prairie provinces showing the highest levels of pride, while Quebec reported the lowest.

Interestingly, despite lower levels of national pride, 41% of Canadians still consider their country one of the best places to live globally. This compares to 50% of American respondents who felt the same about the United States.
