Florida Bill Aims To Make State Help Pay For Trump’s Legal Bills

A Florida bill introduced by Republican State Senator Ileana Garcia is proposing to establish a $5 million fund that aims to provide financial grants to qualified Florida residents who are “victims of political discrimination.” The catch: you must be running for president to qualify.

Former President Donald Trump, currently seeking a second term, resides in the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

While it still has procedural hurdles to overcome, the proposal highlights the unwavering loyalty of Republicans to Trump as the leader of their party. The timing is also interesting, as it follows Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ decision to suspend his White House campaign and endorse the former president.

Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, a key supporter of the bill, underscored the financial prudence of supporting a Florida candidate for the White House. Patronis, who has been Florida’s CFO since 2017, endorsed Trump shortly after DeSantis exited the race.

“If we can help and support a Florida candidate for the White House, that’s just good from a dollars and cents perspective,” he said in a statement.

Trump is currently facing four separate cases — the federal election interference case in Washington, DC, the election interference case in Georgia, the classified documents case in Florida, and the hush money case in New York — with a total of 91 felony charges.

To raise the proposed $5 million for the “Freedom Fighters Fund,” the bill suggests tapping into the state’s public campaign-matching funds program, as well as through voluntary donations via driver’s license registrations.
