In a speech at the Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest conference in Phoenix on Monday, ousted Fox News host Tucker Carlson dismissed rumors of joining Donald Trump’s presidential ticket as his running mate.
Responding to a question from a young attendee about the possibility, Carlson firmly stated, “I am a talk show host. That is what I do.” He expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of politicians, asserting that they are “probably the worst people in our society.”
During his appearance, Carlson articulated his reluctance to engage in politics, not out of fear, but due to doubts about his aptitude for the role. He emphasized, “It’s just impossible to imagine myself getting involved in something like that.”
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has been openly discussing potential running mates, with key criteria including a firm belief in the alleged 2020 election theft and a willingness to challenge its certification.
Among the names being considered, according to a recent report from Axios, are JD Vance, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Kari Lake, and Kristi Noem. Melania Trump reportedly advocated for Carlson as a powerful onstage extension of her husband, believing he could invigorate the campaign trail.
Despite Trump expressing admiration for Carlson’s common sense, the idea has faced skepticism within Trump’s inner circle, with concerns that Carlson’s strong presence might overshadow the former president (maybe this is why Melania wants him to be VP in the first place?). Trump’s staff also reportedly believe that Carlson cannot be easily controlled.
It was also revealed in text messages following the 2020 election Carlson “passionately hated” Trump. “We are very, very close to being able to ignore Trump most nights,” he wrote in a text sent on 4 January 2021. “I truly can’t wait.”
