Israel is currently in chaos after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Defence Minister Yoav Gallant earlier today.
The dismissal of Gallant follows the now-former minister referring to recent efforts by Netanyahu to limit the powers of the judiciary in the country as an “immediate and tangible danger” to the security of the country. The comment was made in a televised statement aired Saturday night, wherein he indicated that members of the Defence Forces were angry and disappointed by the actions of Netanyahu.
Netanyahu’s government is currently looking to change laws in the country to enable parliament to overrule decisions made by the Supreme Court. While Netanyahu claims the changes are meant to stop the courts from having overreaching power, critics fear that it will undermine the independence of the courts, and enable the courts to be used for political purposes.
Following the dismissal of Gallant protestors have taken to the streets of Tel Aviv, while other groups have stormed Netanyahu’s residence.
