MAGA Is Back: Donald Trump Announces 2024 Presidential Bid, And Biden Is [Kinda] Prepared

Opposing term limits in Congress, abolishing Joe Biden’s COVID policies, and paper ballot-only elections–a preview of the third Trump presidency.

Former US President Donald Trump won’t take no for an answer. After losing his reelection bid in 2020, trying to overturn the results that led to US Capitol insurrection, and losing steam in some of his endorsed bets in the recent midterms–the Donald is formalizing his entry to the 2024 presidential elections.

“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump declared in a rally on Tuesday.

The current occupant of the White House was somewhat prepared for his former–and now, possible future–opponent’s announcement. Shortly after Trump’s declaration, President Joe Biden released a video highlighting some of the former president’s “failures,” with a caption saying “Donald Trump failed America.”

When Trump teased his “announcement” on Monday, Biden also released a video highlighting his differences with the former president.

A run with not much traction

A Federal Election Commission filing formalizes the 45th president’s bid to become the country’s 47th leader. Trump is once again running under the Republican party–despite the fact that some politicians within the ranks have been slowly distancing from him.

“I think that’s up to the American people,” former Vice President Mike Pence responded in an interview when asked if Trump should be president again. “But I think we’ll have better choices in the future.”

Trump’s former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted a cryptic insinuation that the ex-president’s recent rant on Truth Social following the midterms results might not be the path to gaining a solid conservative base. “Conservatives are elected when we deliver. Not when we just rail on social media,” he said.

“The party’s just tired of losing,” former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie–an ex-Trump aide–said in a Bloomberg interview. “I remember Donald Trump was the guy who said we were going to do so much winning that we would ask him to stop winning because we were tired of winning. Well, that’s hardly been the case.”

Mogul Rupert Murdoch reportedly told Trump that he and his media outfits will not support him in his 2024 bid, unlike his previous election campaigns. The media magnate also seems to be distancing from his once pal Trump, with his publications packaging Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as the future of the Republican party.

What would another Trump presidency look like?

In announcing his bid, Trump laid out some of his plans once elected again, including abolishing every one of Biden’s COVID mandate and rehiring military who was fired due to these policies “with an apology and full back pay.”

As he always does, the former The Apprentice host made bold promises as he marks the start of his presidential campaign. Reviving his call “drain the swamp,” he plans to push “for a Constitutional Amendment to oppose term limits on members of Congress.”

Once elected, he said he will “ask for a permanent ban on taxpayer funding of campaigns, a lifetime on lobbying by former members of Congress… a ban on members of Congress trading stocks on insider information”–a reference to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, businessman Paul Pelosi, and his position in Nvidia following the CHIPS Act passage in the Senate.

He also plans to put Americans on Mars: “We will plant our beautiful American flag very soon on the surface of Mars, which I got started.”

Commenting on global warming, Trump reiterated an intention to shift the focus instead on a budding nuclear war.

“They want you to focus on global warming that may harm us in 300 years and not nuclear war that could wipe us out in an instant. Biden is leading us to the brink of nuclear war,” he added.

Trump, who continues to spread disinformation that the 2020 elections was rigged, also said that come 2024, he will “demand voter ID, same day voting, and only paper ballots” to “eliminate cheating.”

“This is not just a campaign. This is a quest to save our country,” Trump quipped.

But for some, it’s not a campaign that it used to be.

Biden has stated that he intends to run for re-election in 2024, but he has yet to make an official declaration. On the day after Election Day, he stated that he will announce his decision early next year, after consulting with his family and considering his health.

On the Republican side, DeSantis seems to be the strongest contender to challenge Trump for the nomination. Other names that are being floated include Pence and Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney–who commented on the former president’s announcement, saying “he will never be president again.”
