OnlyFans to Prohibit Sexually Explicit Content Amid Mounting Pressure From Financial Partners

Popular adult-oriented content subscription platform OnlyFans is officially getting out of the pornography business.

OnlyFans has announced it will ban users from posting sexually explicit content beginning in the fall, in a move to comply with mounting demands from its payout providers and banking partners. Come October, OnlyFans’ 2 million-plus content creators will no longer be allowed to post sexually explicit conduct, in an effort to “ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans.”

However, content creators will still be able to post photo and video material containing nudity, as long as it complies with the platform’s updated user policy. As of current, nudity is permissible, except in the event that it is public nudity created or published in a jurisdiction where such acts are prohibited. In order to ensure that creators comply with the updated rules, all material will be verified prior to upload, and once uploaded, content will be monitored by both automated and human moderators.

Since its creation in 2016, OnlyFans has attracted more than 130 million users, which must pay a fee to access photo and video content generated by creators. The platform retains 20% of the creators’ revenue, and has handled over $2 billion in sales in 2020. The website is currently making efforts to raise funds from outside investors at a company valuation of more than $1 billion.
