Rua Gold (TSXV: RUA) announced promising initial results from its ongoing drilling campaign in the Reefton Goldfield, located on New Zealand’s South Island. The project, targeting historic mines in the region, has reported significant near-surface gold intercepts, providing hope for the rejuvenation of what was once a highly productive goldfield.
The mining firm began drilling at the Murray Creek target in July, expanding operations in September by deploying a second drill rig to the Capleston vein system. These areas form part of a historic mining district that yielded approximately 700,000 ounces of gold at a high grade of 25.2 grams per tonne (g/t) during its operational peak.
The exploration strategy aims to assess previously unmined areas and extend mineralized zones identified through surface exploration. Robert Eckford, CEO of Rua Gold, expressed enthusiasm about the initial findings, stating that the results validate the company’s five-year exploration efforts: “The near-surface intercepts on Capleston are encouraging, supporting our thesis that these veins continue beyond the historic workings.”
At Capleston, the company reported that one of the drill holes intersected a 12-meter zone of quartz-pyrite-arsenopyrite mineralization, which included a high-grade 1-meter section grading 3.86 g/t gold from a depth of 31 meters. The historical data from nearby areas also suggest potential, with legacy drill holes encountering gold concentrations as high as 24 g/t in 1-meter sections.

Meanwhile, at the Murray Creek target, Rua Gold’s initial drilling encountered old workings at 344 meters but provided crucial geological information, confirming the dip angle of the Victoria lode. A second drill hole, located 50 meters deeper, is currently underway, with results expected soon. Eckford highlighted the significance of these findings, noting that while the team encountered old tunnels, the drilling results solidify confidence in the lode’s extension at greater depths.

The focus on near-surface mineralization at Capleston positions the company to benefit from low-cost operations, given the proximity to existing transportation infrastructure. This strategic focus could accelerate development timelines and enhance project economics, a key advantage in the mining sector.
The Reefton Goldfield is renowned for its high-grade, orogenic-style gold deposits, making it an attractive site for exploration. Rua Gold’s use of modern exploration techniques—such as 3D geological modeling—further enhances the potential to unlock new gold deposits in historically productive areas.
The company’s efforts to revive the Reefton district align with a broader trend of renewed mining interest in New Zealand, as high gold prices and technological advancements encourage exploration in legacy mining areas. Rua Gold plans to continue with additional drill targets across the region, testing further veins and offset structures at other historic sites within the project area.
