A coup appears to currently be underway in Sudan, which has been running under military power since 2021. Paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces, or the RSF, took control of the Presidential Palace in the capital of Khartoum, at least briefly earlier today.
At the same time, heavy fighting has also taken place at the nearby Army Headquarters, while it has been claimed that several airports have been taken over by the RSF. The group claimed control of airports in Khartoum, Marwa, and al-Abiad.
It is unclear what specifically started the coup, with the RSF claiming that Sudan’s armed forces undertook a surprise attack on the RSF at one of its bases, while the command of Sudan’s army claimed that it was responding to “traitorous plotting” against the country.
Sudan has been ruled by military control since 2021 after a separate coup occurred, which ousted former President Omar al-Bashir. The current government is ran by what is known as the Sovereign Council, which sees the head of the army, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, as the head of the Council. RSF head General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo meanwhile services as the vice-president of the council.
The council has reportedly moved to transition to a civilian-ran government, which is to include the integration of the RSF into the national army. Disagreements surrounding the implementation is what reportedly led to today’s actions.
