Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s approval ratings have plummeted to an all-time low, according to a recent national survey conducted by Abacus Data. The poll, which surveyed 2,964 Canadian adults from September 5-12, 2024, reveals a stark decline in public support for the Prime Minister.
Only 22% of Canadians now hold a positive view of Trudeau, marking a 2-point drop from the previous survey. Conversely, those with a negative impression of the Prime Minister have risen to 61%, a 2-point increase. This results in a net score of -39, the worst recorded for Trudeau in Abacus Data’s tracking history.
Every two to three weeks we ask the same questions to at least 1,500 Canadians as part of the @abacusdataca omnibus survey.

The decline in Trudeau’s popularity is evident across all regions of Canada. His net favorable scores are deeply negative throughout the country, ranging from -22 in Quebec to -54 in Alberta. In other key regions, Trudeau’s net scores stand at -45 in British Columbia, -40 in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, -34 in Ontario, and -32 in Atlantic Canada.
Perhaps most concerning for the Liberal Party is the erosion of support among their base. The survey found that 22% of those who voted Liberal in the 2021 election now have a negative impression of the Prime Minister.
This sharp decline in Trudeau’s approval coincides with broader dissatisfaction with the federal government. Only 24% of Canadians approve of the government’s job performance, a 3-point decrease in just one month. Meanwhile, disapproval has reached a new high of 62%.
The survey also reveals a growing desire for change among Canadians. A staggering 86% of respondents want overall change, with 56% believing there’s a good alternative to the Liberals. Only 14% of Canadians think Justin Trudeau and the Liberals deserve re-election.
The poll also sheds light on the fortunes of other party leaders. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has seen his own approval ratings decline, reaching a net impression of -9, his lowest ever in the tracking data. Negative impressions of Singh have increased by 3 points, while positive impressions have decreased by 4 points.
In contrast, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s ratings have remained relatively stable. The survey shows 39% of respondents have a positive view of Poilievre (down 3 points since early August), while 35% hold a negative view, resulting in a net score of +4.
Notably, Poilievre enjoys greater popularity among younger voters, with a net score of +11 among those aged 18 to 29, compared to -10 among those 60 and older.
