China’s IM Motors Unveils L6 Sedan with Solid-State Battery Option

IM Motors has officially opened pre-orders for its latest all-electric model, the L6 Sedan. The automaker, a joint venture between SAIC Motor (SHA: 600104) and Alibaba (HKG: 9988), is touting the L6’s impressive specifications, including a range of over 1,000 km (620 miles) and the use of semi-solid-state battery technology.

The L6 will be offered in three trims, with the top-of-the-line “Lightyear Edition” featuring a 130 kWh semi-solid-state battery pack. This advanced battery technology, developed through IM Motors’ partnership with QingTao Energy, is expected to deliver unparalleled range and efficiency, according to Electrek

The non-solid-state versions of the L6 will offer battery packs ranging from 90 kWh to 100 kWh, providing CLTC ranges of 700-770 km (435-479 miles).

In addition to its impressive range, the L6 will boast advanced features such as a Vehicle Motion Control (VMC) system, enabling unique maneuvers like the crab walk.

The sedan’s intelligent digital chassis will be powered by Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) and NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) chips, supporting advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like the City Drive feature, which is expected to enter beta testing this quarter and roll out in China by Q4 2024.

Pricing for the IM Motors L6 starts at $31,800 for the base “Max Standard Edition,” with the “Max Performance Edition” priced at $41,475 and the top-tier “Lightyear Edition” starting at around $45,650. This places the L6 as a potential competitor to the Tesla Model 3 and Zeekr 007 sedans in the Chinese market.
