USDA Unveils Hemp Research Roadmap, Invests $10M in Studies

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has unveiled a comprehensive “Hemp Research Needs Roadmap,” as it moves to bolster the burgeoning hemp industry and address key research gaps.

The 19-page document outlines four priority areas for hemp research: breeding and genetics, best practices for production, biomanufacturing for end uses, and transparency and consistency.

Developed with stakeholder input from the National Hemp Industry Research Needs Workshop USDA co-organized with Oregon State University’s Global Hemp Innovation Center in November 2022, the report seeks to strengthen the entire hemp supply chain through targeted research initiatives.

According to USDA, these research priorities are “vital to bolstering hemp industry research” and will facilitate the transfer of agricultural knowledge and advancements to the hemp sector. The roadmap emphasizes the importance of identifying new applications, innovations, and facilitating the development of successful hemp industry sectors.

USDA also proposes establishing a public-private hemp consortium to streamline research efforts, enhance collaboration, improve risk management, and pool resources. This move aims to tackle challenges across the hemp supply chain and foster positive interactions among stakeholders.

The document was a result of USDA and Oregon State University’s Global Hemp Innovation Center’s  National Hemp Industry Research Needs Workshop in November 2022. The department also announced a $10 million investment in OSU’s hemp studies to support research into how hemp materials and products can drive economic development for Northwestern Native American Tribes.

Thirteen tribes have expressed interest in investing in hemp production, biobased manufacturing, and utilization on their reservations, forming an Intertribal Business Consortium to partner with various entities.
