Kazakhstan Clarifies Position on BRICS Partnership Status

Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Russia, Dauren Abayev, has addressed speculation about his country’s relationship with BRICS, emphasizing that Kazakhstan has received partner country status while refraining from pursuing full membership in the organization.

In a recent interview with TASS, Abayev dismissed what he called “groundless insinuations” in media coverage regarding Kazakhstan’s decision not to apply for full membership. The ambassador highlighted that receiving partner country status was already “a big step” for Kazakhstan, adding that the nation remains committed to supporting BRICS initiatives that align with its national interests.

The ambassador identified geopolitical tensions as “the main challenge and threat to the global community,” emphasizing BRICS’ role in promoting international stability. He specifically noted Kazakhstan’s support for Russia’s concept of equal and indivisible security in Eurasia and China’s peace initiative.

Economic cooperation features prominently in Kazakhstan’s engagement with BRICS, particularly given that two founding members – Russia and China – are the country’s largest trading partners. President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev clearly outlined key areas for cooperation, including transport, energy, IT technologies, critical minerals, and food security.

The clarification follows earlier statements from Kazakh Presidential Press Secretary Berik Uali, who confirmed that while Kazakhstan had received an invitation to join BRICS, the country had no immediate plans to submit a membership application.

Regarding President Toqayev’s recent summit speech, Abayev noted that “the entire speech of the head of state was filled with a constructive agenda, and each of its points is a sufficient message,” suggesting these points could support further expert discussions.

The ambassador reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s commitment to closely monitoring BRICS’ development while strengthening productive dialogue with the organization.
