Is Jagmeet Singh Biased in His Attacks Against Loblaws?

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has frequently called out Loblaws (TSX: L) and its CEO Galen Weston in his public statements. While Weston and the company likely deserve it, given their exorbitant gains as Canadians grapple with the cost of living, Singh’s attacks lose a bit of their edge when you find out that there may be actual bias.

Singh has been vocal in his accusations against Loblaws, claiming that the company is “ripping people off” and exploiting Canadians amid soaring grocery prices. He has made it a central focus of his party’s policy to target large corporations that he believes are making record profits at the expense of ordinary citizens struggling to afford basic necessities.

His fight “to take on corporate greed” is tainted by the coincidence that his brother, Gurratan Singh, a former Ontario NDP MPP, is currently a Vice President at Crestview Strategy, a lobbying firm that represents Metro Inc (TSE: MRU). Yes, the same Metro that’s a major competitor of Loblaws in the grocery retail industry.

While the brother Singh has not been directly involved in lobbying for Metro, at least one of the company’s consultants has been actively lobbying for the grocer in the last 12 months.
