One Oklahoma Republican may have something against furries but apparently nothing against fake news.
Rep. Justin Humphrey wants to mandate that “students who purport to be an imaginary animal or animal species” be picked up from school by their parents or “animal control services shall be contacted to remove the student.”
House Bill 3084, which was introduced ahead of the state’s 2024 legislative session, originates from the widely reported hoax about a Michigan school district installing litter boxes for students who identify as “furries” or those who belong in a subculture interested in anthropomorphic animal characters (not unlike cosplayers who dress up and act like as their favorite pop culture characters).
“If you’ve got an animal coming to school, how about we vaccinate them? How about we get them neutered? How about we sent them to the pound?” Humphrey said in a video, attempting to not sound insane as he explained why he proposed the measure.
Humphrey also proposed a bill seeking to label Hispanic people who are gang members as terrorists.
He later apologized for singling out Hispanic people and said he would change the language in the bill to instead say “undocumented.”
