US government officials have accused right wing financial news website Zero Hedge of spreading Russian propaganda.

Unnamed government officials on Tuesday revealed to the Associated Press that Zero Hedge published various articles originally written by Russian-owned media, which were then shared by readers unaware of the alleged connection to Russian spies. The officials did not disclose whether they believe Zero Hedge was aware of links to the spy agencies, and refrained from directly accusing the news website of having ties to the Russian government.

Zero Hedge for its part denied the claims made by US government officials, insisting that it “has never worked, collaborated or cooperated with Russia, nor are there any links to spy agencies.” In an online post, the website said it only publishes “a wide spectrum of views that cover both sides of a given story.” Instead, Zero Hedge claimed that the US government is attempting to distract the website’s audience from the current state of poor economic conditions.
