Tesla Killer? Mercedes-Benz Launches New CLA Electric Sedan Concept

Stand aside (or park in the corner), Tesla Model 3.

Mercedes-Benz (ETR: MBG) has unveiled its highly anticipated CLA electric sedan concept, setting the stage for a new era in entry-level electric vehicles.

Revealed at the IAA Mobility event, the Mercedes CLA concept boasts impressive efficiency, offering a WLTP range exceeding 466 miles (750 km), earning it the nickname of the “one-liter car.” This concept marks the introduction of Mercedes’ new entry-level EV class, distinct from its “EQ” branding.

This electric CLA will be the first vehicle to utilize Mercedes’ advanced Modular Architecture (MMA) platform, which is expected to deliver exceptional energy efficiency. It draws inspiration from the ultra-efficient VISION EQXX, featuring an 800V platform, high-energy-density batteries, and an efficient electric drive unit.

The CLA concept will offer two battery chemistry options, including an anode design with silicon-oxide content and a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) variant. Innovative adhesive technology replaces traditional screws, resulting in a lighter and more compact battery.

The Mercedes CLA concept introduces an 800V system, allowing for up to 250 kW DC charging, providing a remarkable 248 miles (400 km) of range in just 15 minutes. Furthermore, it supports bidirectional charging, enabling the vehicle to function as a backup energy source.

In terms of design, the CLA concept maintains Mercedes’ iconic elements while embracing an electric aesthetic. The model showcases distinctive features such as new headlights, a shark-nose front end, and star-shaped headlamp clusters. Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, described it as a new era in design, reinterpreting iconic elements for the electric age.

Inside the vehicle, a minimalist and tech-focused approach prevails, highlighted by the full-width MBUX Superscreen with turbine-like virtual air vents. Physical air vents are discreetly positioned behind the screen, serving as ambient lighting sources. The front bucket seats feature illuminated surfaces for smartphone charging.

Mercedes’ proprietary Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) serves as the digital brain of the vehicle, featuring AI and machine learning capabilities. While initially launching with Level 2 autonomous capabilities, MB.OS is prepared for an SAE Level 3 autonomy system upgrade. It also incorporates a Child Presence Detection (CPD) system to enhance child safety in hot conditions.
