The Lettuce Wins Again, Outlasts Biden Campaign

President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign has come to an abrupt, but not unexpected end, falling short in a peculiar challenge against an unlikely opponent: a head of lettuce.

The unusual betting pool, inspired by a similar situation during Liz Truss’s brief tenure as UK Prime Minister, highlighted the mounting pressure on the sitting president’s re-election campaign.

The wager, which began following Biden’s lackluster performance in the June debate against former President Donald Trump, invited bettors to wager on whether the President’s campaign would outlast the typical 10-day shelf life of lettuce.

Those who bet on the lettuce didn’t have to wait long, as Biden withdrew from the race just three days into the 10-day wager.

On Sunday, President Biden announced his decision to step down from the campaign trail and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris shortly after.

The bet was hosted on Polymarket, a prominent prediction market, the same market that saw Biden’s chances of securing the Democratic nomination plummet from 90% to 49% in less than a week after the debate. At the same time, Harris’s prospects surged, with her odds rising from a mere 1% to 35% in the same period.
