Vodafone Signs 10-Year AI Deal with Microsoft

Vodafone (LON: VOD) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) have entered into a 10-year partnership aimed at delivering generative AI, digital, enterprise, and cloud services to over 300 million businesses and consumers in European and African markets.

As part of the agreement, Vodafone will invest $1.5 billion in customer-focused AI developed with Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI and Copilot technologies. The collaboration also involves replacing physical data centers with cost-effective and scalable Azure cloud services.

In return, Microsoft will become an equity investor in Vodafone’s managed Internet of Things (IoT) platform, slated to become a standalone business by April. Microsoft will also assist in scaling Vodafone’s mobile financial platform in Africa.

Vodafone’s CEO, Margherita Della Valle, sees this partnership as a catalyst for the digital transformation of business customers, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, emphasizing the potential for profit growth.

Vodafone’s Chief Financial Officer, Luka Mucic, highlighted the transformative impact of Microsoft’s AI, particularly through the deployment of the TOBi chatbot, enhancing customer service with consistent and intelligent responses. The technology aims to boost the productivity and quality of interactions for customer service staff, instead of just replacing them with AI.

Vodafone’s M-PESA mobile money platform, operating in various African countries, aligns with Microsoft’s objectives in the region, focusing on building digital literacy and utilizing generative AI capabilities “to help customers make more intelligent financial decisions,” said Microsoft’s Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff.
