Following what has been a detrimental week for Russia’s military across occupied regions of Ukraine, a number of local Russian politicians are calling on president Vladimir Putin to resign for inflicting “harm on the future of Russia and its citizens.”
A petition posted on Twitter by St Petersburg municipal deputy Xenia Torstrem and signed by more than 30 other municipal deputies, is calling on Putin’s resignation after Russian troops lost significant ground across occupied areas in Ukraine over the weekend in a sudden counteroffensive by Kyiv troops. “We, the municipal deputies of Russia, believe that the actions of President Vladimir Putin harm the future of Russia and its citizens,” the translated petition read. “We demand the resignation of Vladimir Putin from the post of President of the Russian Federation!”
Credible reports surfaced on social media and other major news sites indicating that Russian troops were forced to abandon large quantities of arms and ammunition in wake of Ukraine’s sudden onslaught in the city of Izyum in the southeastern region of Kharkiv. The blow to troop morale has even tightened Putin’s grip on the narrative, with the Kremlin going as far as to arrest several Russian officials after they proposed charging the president with high treason over the Ukraine war.

The petition, which was primarily signed by municipal deputies in Moscow and St. Petersburg, calls on more local authorities to join the movement. “The text of the petition is concise and does not ‘discredit’ anyone. If you are a municipal deputy and want to join, you are welcome.” However, such criticism of Putin likely will not bode well for the officials, given a recently imposed Kremlin law punishing anyone with up to 15 years in prison for disseminating “fake news” about the Ukraine military operation.
