Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Monday announced that 100 Canadians have been added to the list of people it has banned from entering the country.
The announcement was made shortly after Canada sanctioned 23 Russians and pledged $500 million in additional military assistance for Ukraine, as Russia’s unprovoked invasion nears its ninth month.
The additional sanctioned Russians are “involved in gross and systematic human rights violations against Russian opposition leaders,” according to Ottawa. These are officials in the justice and security sectors.

The 100 Canadians in Russia’s no-entry list meanwhile include actor Jim Carrey, author Margaret Atwood, and KGB historian Amy Knight. Also named were Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, former Quebec premier Jean Charest, and former federal Conservative cabinet minister Peter MacKay, as well as several journalists.
The ministry said that many of the new additions to the list have links to ethnic Ukrainian organizations, and are banned because of their involvement in the “formation of (Canada’s) aggressively anti-Russian course.”
