A US district judge last week ruled that Donald Trump’s lawyer could be compelled to testify, after prosecutors showed compelling evidence that the former President deliberately withheld information from his own attorneys regarding classified government material found at his Mar-a-Lago home.
As confirmed by NBC News, US District Judge Beryl Howell last Friday decided that special counsel Jack Smith presented a strong case establishing that Trump committed an offence using his attorneys via a potential obstruction of justice regarding the classified-documents probe, in addition to the illegal retention of confidential government information.
Using the “crime fraud” exception, Howell ruled that prosecutors can circumvent special protections granted to Trump’s lawyer Evan Corcoran via attorney-client privilege, ultimately ordering Corcoran to testify in front of the federal grand jury. In response, Trump’s legal team immediately appealed Howell’s ruling, which was stayed by the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit. Both sides have since abruptly filed briefs regarding the matter.
