Apple’s Mac Shipments Slump 40% As PC Demand Boom Ends

The pandemic-fuelled demand for computers has fallen substantially over the past year, causing Apple’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) Mac shipments to plummet by a staggering 40% year-over-year.

According to research from the International Data Corporation, global computer shipments fell 29% from the first quarter 2022 to around 56.9 million thanks to “weak demand, excess inventory, and a worsening macroeconomic climate.”

Apple is one of the companies feeling the effects of declining demand for personal computers; the tech company suffered a disproportionate 40.5% year-over-year plunge in PC shipments last quarter, while Dell, Lenovo, and ASUS suffered declines of 30%. The decline in demand for PCs can be attributed to several factors, including the increase in demand for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, as well as the end of the pandemic— halting the shift towards remote work and online communication.

“Even with heavy discounting, channels, and PC makers can expect elevated inventory to persist into the middle of the year and potentially into the third quarter,” wrote IDC’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers research manager Jitesh Ubrani.
