CBC-Radio Canada announced on Tuesday that the network, on “a handful of Twitter accounts,” will resume activity after it left the platform less than a month ago when it received the “Government-funded Media” label.
“Today, we will resume some activity on a handful of umbrella Twitter accounts, including @CBCNews, but we will significantly reduce our overall Twitter footprint and continue to assess the platform against our strategy,” CBC News editor in chief Brodie Fenlon wrote on Tuesday.
Twitter quietly removed the labels shortly after the ‘labeled’ news outlets left the platform. NPR was the first major news organization to announce it would stop using the platform, followed by PBS and then CBC.

The news outlets all decried the deceptive labeling, arguing that while they are funded by their respective governments, they maintain editorial independence — contrary to Twitter’s definition that government-funded media “may have varying degrees of government involvement over editorial content.”
CBC, though, was found guilty of a chart crime. They appeared to have used some chart magic to downplay the proportion of its funding that comes from the government.
CBC’s announcement of its return to the social media platform was met with disapproval, with some saying the platform was better off without them.
Fenlon also wrote that CBC will continue to assess the platform against its social media strategy.
