Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to conscript 150,000 citizens for compulsory military service during the spring draft period from April 1 to July 15, 2024.
The decree, published on the Kremlin’s official website, and reported by TASS, calls up men aged 18 to 30 who are not in reserve and are eligible for conscription.
This conscription drive follows a change in legislation last year that raised the maximum conscription age from 27 to 30. Those who turned 27 before the end of 2023, as well as those aged 28 or 29, are exempt from this draft along with individuals already in the reserve forces.

Conscription is a longstanding practice in Russia, where all men are required to complete a year of military service or equivalent training upon reaching adulthood. However, it remains a contentious issue, with many attempting to avoid the bi-annual call-ups.
The decree also stipulates the dismissal of soldiers, sailors, sergeants, and petty officers whose conscription terms have expired. Last spring, Russia planned to conscript 147,000 individuals, while the autumn 2022 campaign involved 130,000 conscripts.
These conscripts cannot legally be deployed for combat roles outside of Russia, unlike the partial mobilization of 300,000 reservists undertaken for the war in Ukraine.
