Poland Also Wants Canadian LNG Exports, But Trudeau Won’t Budge

In a recent interview with CTV’s Question Period host Vassy Kapelos, Polish President Andrzej Duda expressed his country’s interest in purchasing Canadian liquefied natural gas (LNG) if it becomes available. Duda’s remarks come amidst ongoing efforts by Western nations to reduce their reliance on Russian energy sources following the invasion of Ukraine.

“If Canada is ready to supply LNG to Poland, we have got our LNG terminal … right now,” Duda said, emphasizing Poland’s existing infrastructure and plans for expansion. He highlighted that Poland already buys LNG from American and Qatari companies and would be willing to negotiate and accept Canadian gas if it could be offered at competitive prices.

Duda’s comments echo Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who recently told Kapelos that Greece would “of course” be interested in Canadian LNG. Other nations, including Germany and Japan, have also voiced their interest in procuring Canada’s LNG exports.

However, the Canadian government has expressed reservations about subsidizing future LNG projects. In an interview last month, Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said that the federal government is “not interested” in providing subsidies for LNG projects, including the electrification of those currently in development.

Duda noted that he did discuss “energy issues” with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during his recent visit to Canada, but it was unclear if the two leaders talked about LNG.

According to Natural Resources Canada, there are eight LNG projects in various stages of development, with the first export facility scheduled to commence operations next year, initially supplying Asian countries.

The debate over Canada’s potential role as an LNG exporter to Europe has intensified since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as Western nations seek alternative energy sources to reduce their dependence on Russian oil and gas.
