OpenAI Co-Founder Ilya Sutskever Is Starting A New AI Firm

Just a little over a month after he left the company, OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever has revealed the formation of Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), a new company dedicated solely to the development of safe superintelligent AI. The announcement was made via Sutskever’s X account and has since garnered significant attention in the tech community.

“We will pursue safe superintelligence in a straight shot, with one focus, one goal, and one product. We will do it through revolutionary breakthroughs produced by a small cracked team,” Sutskever tweeted.

Safe Superintelligence

SSI’s mission is clear and singular: to create a safe superintelligence. According to the company’s official statement, the focus will be on ensuring that safety measures and capabilities advance simultaneously, a critical approach to mitigate risks associated with the rapid development of AI technologies.

“Superintelligence is within reach. Building safe superintelligence (SSI) is the most important technical problem of our time,” the company said on its official website.

Superintelligence refers to an advanced form of artificial intelligence that surpasses human cognitive abilities in all domains, including problem-solving, creativity, and social skills. It aims to perform intellectual tasks better than humans, potentially leading to groundbreaking advancements in various fields. However, this capability also poses significant ethical and existential risks if not aligned with human values.

“Our singular focus means no distraction by management overhead or product cycles, and our business model means safety, security, and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures,” the company added.

The firm added that it has also established the world’s first straight-shot SSI lab. The company characterizes itself as an American business with offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv.

Sutskever founded the company with Cue co-founder Daniel Gross and entrepreneur Daniel Levy.

“Now is the time. Join us,” Sutskever’s announcement concluded, underscoring the urgency and significance of this endeavor.

This follows Sutskever leaving OpenAI in May 2024.
