Prime Minister Mark Carney’s newly formed government will move forward without Jonathan Wilkinson, ending the North Vancouver MP’s seven-year stretch in Canada’s federal cabinet.
Wilkinson, who previously managed three key portfolios including Energy and Natural Resources, was not among the 28 officials sworn in during Tuesday’s ceremony at Rideau Hall.
“I deeply love this country,” Wilkinson wrote in a statement posted to social media shortly before the cabinet announcement. “The privilege of serving over these past seven years remains one of the greatest honors of my life.”
The former environmental technology executive first entered politics in 2015 and won his North Vancouver-Capilano riding for a fourth consecutive term in last month’s federal election.

During his cabinet tenure, Wilkinson oversaw the expansion of Canada’s marine protected areas and established the nation’s Critical Minerals Strategy with $3.8 billion in initial funding.
Goldman Sachs veteran Tim Hodgson, who previously chaired Ontario’s Hydro One, will take over the natural resources portfolio.
While acknowledging the changes, Wilkinson expressed particular gratitude to his constituents: “You have placed your trust in me to represent your interests not only in the riding but on national and international stages.”
Wilkinson’s departure marks a significant cabinet shift as Carney, who took over party leadership from Justin Trudeau earlier this year, puts his stamp on the Liberal government with a mix of new faces and returning veterans.
