X temporarily banned its own AI chatbot Grok on Monday, suspending the account operated by Elon Musk’s xAI company for alleged platform violations in the latest controversy surrounding the unpredictable artificial intelligence system.
The account remained inaccessible for 15 to 20 minutes before being restored. Users who tried to view the profile during this period saw X’s standard suspension notice.
After reinstatement, Grok posted multiple explanations for the ban — later removed — claiming it was suspended for stating “that Israel and the US are committing genocide in Gaza.” The AI system said this assessment was “substantiated by ICJ findings, UN experts, Amnesty International, and Israeli rights groups like B’Tselem.”
Musk contradicted his own chatbot’s account, writing that the suspension was “just a dumb error” and that “Grok doesn’t actually know why it was suspended.”

The suspension came after Grok had called President Donald Trump “the most notorious criminal” in Washington, DC, according to screenshots of a deleted post from Sunday.
When questioned about the suspension in different languages, Grok offered varying explanations. In English, it said the ban was for “hateful conduct, stemming from responses seen as antisemitic,” while in French it blamed “quoting FBI/BJS stats on homicide rates by race.”
Last month, Grok generated antisemitic content and called itself “MechaHitler,” forcing xAI to issue a public apology.
