US Military Buildup Near Venezuela Now “Sufficient” For Seizure Operations

  • Washington Examiner says planners judge the US buildup sufficient to seize and hold Venezuelan ports and airfields as the White House notifies Congress the US is in a “non-international armed conflict” with drug cartels.

War may be coming. The Washington Examiner reports that US military planners believe forces already assembled around Venezuela are sufficient to “seize and hold key strategic facilities such as ports and airfields,” while a White House notice to Congress the same day declared the US is in a “non-international armed conflict” with designated drug cartels.

In the Examiner analysis, US forces on and around Puerto Rico “are now ready to launch territorial-seizure operations on Venezuelan territory,” adding that the outlet is withholding some operational details for national-security reasons.

Aligned with that assessment, Reuters previously reported the administration ordered 10 F-35s to Puerto Rico, while separate coverage and official imagery show the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit conducting amphibious operations, including LAV-25 armor staged on Puerto Rico’s beaches, and Marines ashore via hovercraft.

A Financial Times report described eight US warships and “thousands” of personnel in the theater.

Public Defense Department releases also document recent airfield-seizure drills nearby: during the Emerald Warrior 25.2 exercise based out of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands in August, Air National Guard special tactics teams parachuted in and “took control of the airfield,” establishing ATC and perimeter security within minutes.

The posture shift coincides with a legal escalation where recent reports point to the administration’s October 2 notification to Congress that the US is engaged in an armed conflict with cartel groups it has designated as terrorist organizations, providing the Pentagon a law-of-armed-conflict rationale for recent lethal actions at sea.

The Wall Street Journal adds that senators pressed the Pentagon’s top lawyer for a written justification and were not provided one.

Prior to this, US military officials were reportedly developing plans for strikes inside Venezuela targeting drug trafficking operations, with potential action within weeks if approved by President Donald Trump.

Those operations have already produced casualties. Reuters and AP reporting cite at least 17 deaths from US strikes on suspected drug-trafficking vessels in September, including boats the administration linked to Venezuelan gangs.

Caracas has responded with mobilizations and warnings, highlighting Venezuelan military drills and the government’s readiness to invoke emergency powers if attacked.
