Ottawa added two projects sans fanfare to the federal Major Projects List, updating a newly published MPO projects map with the Alto High-Speed Rail and Port of Churchill Plus projects, bringing the total projects list to seven.
The map originally displayed five projects that had been announced first: LNG Canada Phase 2 in Kitimat, British Columbia; Darlington New Nuclear Project in Bowmanville, Ontario; the Contrecoeur Terminal Container Project in Contrecoeur, Quebec; McIlvenna Bay Foran Copper Mine Project in east-central Saskatchewan; and the Red Chris Mine Expansion in northwest BC.
Alto High-Speed Rail is listed along the Ontario-Quebec corridor while Port of Churchill Plus appears in Churchill, Manitoba with Arctic Gateway Group as the proponent under the Transportation sector.

The Alto High-Speed Rail was first announced by then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau back in February, billing it as the largest infrastructure undertaking in Canadian history, spanning roughly 1,000 kilometres between Toronto and Quebec City with trains reaching up to 300 km/h and cutting Toronto–Montréal travel to about three hours.
On the other hand, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson cited Port of Churchill Plus last month as the first example of Ottawa deploying “business development teams” through MPO to actively advance second-wave, undeveloped proposals.
