Trump Slaps 25% Tariff on Iran-linked Trade; Embassy Warns “Leave Iran Now”

President Donald Trump said “effective immediately” that any country doing business with Iran will face a 25% tariff on any and all business being done with the US, framing the order as “final and conclusive” in a statement echoed by the White House.

The tariff language is structured as a secondary penalty aimed at third countries rather than a direct bilateral measure, explicitly tying access to US commerce to whether a country maintains commercial ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Top trade partners to Iran cited in public commentary include China, Iraq, the UAE, Turkey, and India, putting a wide set of regional and global trade lanes in the blast radius if the tariff threat is operationalized as written.

‘Leave Iran now’

Related, the US Virtual Embassy Iran issued a countrywide alert warning that protests across Iran are escalating and may turn violent, with risks including arrests and injuries, alongside increased security measures, road closures, public transportation disruptions, and ongoing internet blockages.

“Leave Iran now,” the embassy advised.

The alert states the Iranian government has restricted access to mobile, landline, and national internet networks, and advises US citizens to expect continued internet outages and to plan alternative means of communication.

Air travel options are described as deteriorating, with airlines continuing to limit or cancel flights to and from Iran and “several” suspending service until Friday.

While advising citizens to leave, it also notes that if it is safe to do so, travelers should consider departing Iran by land to Armenia or Türkiye, signaling a preference for overland routes amid flight disruptions.

For those unable to depart, the alert directs US citizens to identify a secure location in a residence or another safe building and maintain supplies including food, water, medications, and other essential items, while avoiding demonstrations, keeping a low profile, and monitoring local media for breaking news.

The alert flags a specific legal and detention exposure for US-Iranian dual nationals, stating they must exit Iran on Iranian passports and that Iran does not recognize dual nationality, treating dual nationals solely as Iranian citizens.

It adds that US nationals are at significant risk of questioning, arrest, and detention in Iran, and warns that showing a US passport or demonstrating connections to the United States can be sufficient reason for Iranian authorities to detain someone.
