‘Weapon of Mass Distraction’: Trump Turns to Aliens Because the Epstein Files Just Won’t Go Away

On the same day that British police arrested a royal family member over his Epstein ties and US lawmakers demanded domestic prosecutions, President Donald Trump ordered the release of all government files on aliens and UFOs. The White House had given no prior indication that the directive was coming.

Trump posted the order on Truth Social on Thursday evening, instructing the Pentagon and “other relevant Departments and Agencies, to begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), and any and all other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters.” He set no timeline and named no specific documents.

That morning, British police arrested Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor — King Charles III’s younger brother and the first senior British royal in modern history to face criminal arrest — on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The charge stemmed from Epstein files released by the US Department of Justice showing Mountbatten-Windsor had forwarded confidential government trade briefings to the convicted sex offender while serving as a UK trade envoy. He was released after 12 hours of questioning and remains under investigation.

Republican Congressman Thomas Massie immediately called on FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi to pursue American targets: “Now we need JUSTICE in the United States.” It was a pointed call — at a House Judiciary Committee hearing just nine days earlier, Bondi had responded to questions about the absence of Epstein indictments by pivoting to the stock market.

“The Dow is over 50,000 right now,” she told lawmakers. “S&P at almost 7,000, and the NASDAQ smashing records. That’s what we should be talking about.” The line went viral.

The UN Human Rights Council declared the Epstein case shows “the marks of a crime against humanity.”

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump called Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest “very sad” and “so bad for the royal family.” Asked whether Epstein associates could face arrest in the US, he said: “Well, you know, I’m the expert in a way, because I’ve been totally exonerated.” The Epstein files reference Trump and Melania Trump more than 38,000 times.

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt had no idea the announcement was coming — earlier in the week, she laughed when asked about a possible alien speech, saying: “A speech on aliens would be news to me.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, whom Trump’s post addressed under the title “Secretary of War,” responded with an alien emoji.

An unclassified Pentagon report submitted to Congress in June 2024 logged 485 UAP reports from service members — 118 of which turned out to be “prosaic objects such as various types of balloons, birds, and unmanned aerial systems.” The report concluded: “AARO has discovered no evidence of extraterrestrial beings, activity, or technology.” A separate 2024 Pentagon analysis attributed the 1950s and ’60s spike in UAP sightings to tests of advanced US spy planes.

Trump also spent the day feuding with former President Barack Obama, who said in a weekend podcast that aliens were “real” before clarifying he meant only that the universe’s scale makes extraterrestrial life statistically plausible — and that he saw “no evidence” of it in office.

Trump accused him of leaking classified information. “He gave classified information. He’s not supposed to be doing that. He made a big mistake,” Trump told reporters, adding: “I may get him out of trouble by declassifying.” On whether he believes in aliens: “I don’t know if they’re real or not.”
