Toronto’s Shen Yun Show Halted by Bomb Threat, Venue Evacuated

A Shen Yun performance at the Four Seasons Centre in Toronto was abruptly cancelled due to a bomb threat, forcing the evacuation of the venue and leaving audiences unable to enter according to various posts on social media. The incident, which occurred today, marks the latest disruption for the controversial Chinese dance troupe amid ongoing tensions.

While the authenticity of the bomb threat remains unclear, the impact on the event was immediate and tangible. Patrons were barred from the venue, and the performance was called off for the evening, casting a shadow over Shen Yun’s Canadian engagements.

This incident follows a broader pattern of challenges for Shen Yun, a New York-based group tied to the Falun Gong spiritual movement, which is banned in China and has long clashed with the country’s ruling communist regime. The troupe has faced accusations of interference by Chinese authorities, with claims of sabotage and transnational repression often cited by supporters.

Adding to the group’s difficulties, Ottawa’s National Arts Centre (NAC) has confirmed it will not host Shen Yun in 2026, ending a nearly two-decade relationship. Internal emails from January reveal that Heather Gibson, the NAC’s executive producer for popular music and variety programming, recommended cutting ties due to repeated breaches of contractual agreements, particularly concerning box office operations. Gibson also pointed to unspecified allegations against the organization, while acknowledging potential media backlash and public campaigns over the decision.

The NAC’s move came after months of deliberation and political pressure. Liberal MP Judy Sgro sought explanations in February on behalf of the Falun Dafa Association of Canada, while Conservative MP Garnett Genuis expressed concern in March over delays in scheduling Shen Yun’s 2026 dates, citing the importance of preserving artistic freedoms in Canada amid alleged efforts by the Chinese Communist Party to discredit the group.

Further scrutiny surrounds Shen Yun following a New York Times investigation last year, which alleged emotional abuse of young dancers, grueling work hours, and discouragement of medical treatment for injuries. The report also claimed the organization amassed hundreds of millions of dollars over the past decade through questionable methods, allegations Shen Yun has denied as unfounded.

The Toronto cancellation and NAC’s decision reflect mounting hurdles for Shen Yun in Canada. As of today, no rescheduling details for the disrupted Four Seasons Centre performance have been announced.

UPDATE:

Constable Stephanie Miceli of Toronto Police Service told CP24 ‘this threat appears to be unfounded,” via email.
