Iran Claims Downing of U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle Over Central Iran With New Air Defense System

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced on April 3, that it shot down a U.S. fighter jet over central Iran using a newly developed air defense system, marking a sharp escalation in ongoing military tensions with the United States.

The IRGC’s central command headquarters claimed the aircraft was a fifth-generation F-35 stealth fighter, struck by the aerospace force’s advanced technology. However, images released by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency and analyzed by independent experts point to wreckage consistent with an F-15E Strike Eagle, a twin-seat combat jet. Markings on the debris, including a red band on the tailfin, suggest the aircraft belongs to the 494th Fighter Squadron based at RAF Lakenheath in England, a unit frequently deployed to the U.S. Central Command region.

Iranian officials stated the jet crashed with a massive explosion, leaving little chance for the pilot—or potentially two crew members, given the F-15E’s configuration—to survive. The IRGC framed the incident as a direct response to recent U.S. threats, with Tasnim quoting officials calling it a rebuttal to President Donald Trump’s warnings of escalated strikes on Iranian infrastructure.

Separately, the IRGC claimed a second shootdown within 12 hours, releasing video footage purportedly showing a U.S. F-15 over Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz being targeted by an advanced naval air defense system on April 2. The video captures the aircraft maneuvering and releasing flares, though it does not depict a direct hit. U.S. Central Command swiftly denied this claim, asserting all American fighter aircraft were accounted for and labeling Iran’s statements as false, a pattern they say has repeated at least six times.

Adding to the unfolding situation, a U.S. Air Force MH-60G rescue helicopter was spotted over southern Iran’s Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province on the morning of April 3, potentially linked to recovery efforts following the reported loss of the F-15E.

The Pentagon has remained silent on the central Iran incident, neither confirming nor denying the loss of an aircraft. Analysts caution that while the wreckage photos appear genuine, with parts matching an F-15E’s vertical tail and wing sections, manipulation or misrepresentation of older debris remains a possibility. Iran has a history of collecting foreign aircraft wrecks, though no prior documented F-15E losses in the region align with the 494th Fighter Squadron’s markings.

This incident unfolds against a backdrop of intensified conflict, with U.S. and Israeli air offensives on Iran since February 28, resulting in over 1,340 deaths as reported by Iranian authorities. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes on Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting U.S. forces.

The alleged shootdown, if confirmed, would represent a notable advancement in Iran’s air defense capabilities, with potential losses to U.S. military assets in the region already estimated at $2.9 billion alongside 13 troops killed and 303 wounded.
