China Denies Any Deal With Trump Not to Arm Iran, Calls Weapons Claims ‘Purely Fabricated’

China’s Foreign Ministry rejected President Donald Trump’s claim that Beijing agreed not to supply weapons to Iran, calling the reports fabricated and warning of countermeasures if the US uses the allegations to justify new tariffs.

Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday that Xi Jinping had made a personal commitment by letter not to arm Iran. “This situation will never happen again. They have agreed not to send weapons to Iran.” He told Fox Business he wrote Xi after hearing China was supplying Iran with weapons, and Xi wrote back saying “essentially, he’s not doing that.”

Spokesperson Guo Jiakun told a press briefing April 14 that reports of Chinese military support for Iran were “purely fabricated,” warning that China would respond with countermeasures if Washington imposed tariffs on the basis of the accusations. A day earlier, Guo called the same reports “groundless smears and malicious associations.”

Beijing has neither confirmed the exchange of letters nor acknowledged any agreement — only denied that weapons transfers took place. Trump has framed the claimed pledge as a diplomatic win tied to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, with a bilateral summit expected within weeks.

Yun Sun, director of the China Program at the Stimson Center, told Military.com that Beijing was unlikely to take immediate action given the upcoming Trump visit. “There is no need to spoil the good momentum they have been building with POTUS,” Sun said.

Throughout the US-Iran war, China has called the US-Israeli strikes a violation of international law, condemned the naval blockade of Iranian ports, and urged ceasefire negotiations — while avoiding direct military involvement and criticizing Iran’s attacks on Gulf states, with which Beijing maintains deep economic ties.
