Amazon to Pay Some Customers Who Choose to Pick Up Their Orders

After decades of setting the standard for instant gratification in home deliveries, Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) is offering to pay shoppers $10 to pick up their own orders. The e-commerce giant has been finding ways to cut costs after a slump in consumer demand.

But the company has claimed that the promotion, which was launched in February, is not another way to cut delivery and return costs but an offer given to shoppers who have not used Amazon Pickup at all or have not used it in the last 12 months.

“We offer customers a variety of ways to get their packages, inclusive of delivery and pickup options. The $10 Amazon Pickup promotion isn’t new,” Amazon said in a statement.

The promo was recently offered to a number of customers via email. Shoppers can get $10 off on orders $25 or more if they retrieve it themselves at designated pickup points at locations such as Amazon Fresh, Kohl’s stores, or Whole Foods.

The service will also help Amazon cut costs on returns. In April, The Information reported that Amazon, known for its fast, free delivery and returns, was going to start charging $1 for UPS returns. The company also cut 18,000 jobs in January plus another 9,000 in March, citing slower consumer demand coming from the explosive growth during the pandemic.

The company’s first-quarter earnings report beat estimates. Amazon recorded $127.36 billion in net sales, an increase from Q1 2022’s $116.44 billion.
