Canada’s Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree’s phone number was discovered in documents seized during a 2006 police raid on a suspected Tamil Tigers fundraising operation, according to records obtained by Global News.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police found Anandasangaree’s contact information during Project Osaluki, a counter-terrorism investigation into the World Tamil Movement, which authorities alleged raised millions of dollars in Canada for the Tamil Tigers terrorist organization.
The raid happened in 2006, nearly a decade before Anandasangaree entered federal politics as a Liberal MP. He was then a law student who had organized community tsunami relief efforts for Sri Lanka.

Anandasangaree now oversees Canada’s national security agencies, including the RCMP, Canadian Security Intelligence Service and Canada Border Services Agency. He became Public Safety Minister in May 2025 under Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Within weeks of his appointment, Anandasangaree removed himself from decisions involving the World Tamil Movement and Tamil Tigers, citing ethical precautions, his spokesperson said.
The Tamil Tigers, also known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, were designated a terrorist organization by Canada in 2006. The group conducted assassinations and bombings during Sri Lanka’s civil war before being defeated by government forces in 2009.
The World Tamil Movement was added to Canada’s terrorist entities list in 2008 after investigators determined it acted as the Tamil Tigers’ Canadian front organization.
Anandasangaree’s office said the minister “denounces terrorism in all its forms” and takes his responsibilities regarding integrity and transparency “extremely seriously.”
