China Tightens Border Controls to Fend Off New Mpox Strain

Chinese authorities have announced stringent measures to prevent the import of the mpox virus, as global cases of a new, more severe strain continue to rise. The General Administration of Customs of China has unveiled a six-month plan, effective from August 15, aimed at monitoring and controlling the potential entry of the virus into the country.

Under the new regulations, arrivals from countries with confirmed mpox infections must declare their condition to customs if they have been exposed to mpox or exhibit symptoms such as fever, headache, back pain, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, or rashes. Customs officers will implement medical measures, including sampling and mpox testing, for individuals who make such declarations.

The plan also includes sanitation protocols for vehicles, containers, cargo, and other items from affected regions, which will be sanitized if contaminated or potentially contaminated. The National Disease Control and Prevention Administration and the National Health Commission have directed their local branches to strengthen collaboration and information sharing with customs and other relevant authorities.

Dr. Li Tongzeng, an infectious disease specialist at Beijing Youan Hospital, emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for those who have been exposed to mpox or experience symptoms.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention noted that while mpox is primarily transmitted through close physical contact, particularly during sexual activity, the risk from daily contact is lower. However, authorities are not taking any chances given the severity of the new strain.

These measures come in the wake of the World Health Organization’s recent declaration of mpox as a global health emergency. The new strain, identified as clade I, has caused over 16,000 new cases and 511 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo since November.
