In an announcement at Apple’s (NASDQ: AAPL) Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2024, Apple and OpenAI revealed a new partnership aimed at integrating ChatGPT into iOS, iPadOS, and macOS systems.
The integration of ChatGPT, powered by the latest GPT-4o, will allow users to access sophisticated AI functionalities seamlessly within Apple’s ecosystem. These capabilities include advanced image and document understanding, and they can be accessed without the need for separate tools. Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, will also be able to tap into ChatGPT’s intelligence, providing answers directly after obtaining user consent.
Apple has emphasized its commitment to privacy in this collaboration. Requests made through Siri and the systemwide Writing Tools will not be stored by OpenAI, and users’ IP addresses will be obscured. Additionally, users have the option to connect their ChatGPT accounts to apply their data preferences according to OpenAI’s policies.
“Together with Apple, we’re making it easier for people to benefit from what AI can offer,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. “Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation, and this partnership aligns with OpenAI’s mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone.”
Musk block?
However, the announcement has not been without controversy. X user Christopher David (@Tazerface16) sparked a heated discussion by claiming that Elon Musk’s social media platform blocked Apple’s account for every user. David’s post read, “Elon just blocked @Apple for every single Twitter user over the new agreement between Apple and Open AI. He’s such a toddler.”

However, the community note added to David’s tweet pointed out that Apple only posts ads on X, which do not appear on their profile. Christopher Stanley, an X employee, confirmed this, stating, “Their posts are promoted, thus ads, and don’t show up under normal posts.”
David responded, arguing that the community note was addressing a different issue and calling it “completely deceptive.” He maintained that the note did not address his claim about the forced block of Apple.
“The Community note does not address the issue of the fact that Twitter forced us to block
@Apple. It discusses a completely unrelated issue about whether Apple ever tweeted from that account. This is unrelated to my tweet and completely deceptive,” he said.
Musk had previously publicly threatened to ban Apple devices at his companies if Apple proceeds with the OpenAI integration. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but has since parted ways with the company, expressed his concerns about the potential security implications of such a move.
He expressed doubts about Apple’s ability to ensure the security and privacy of user data once handed over to OpenAI and criticized Apple for not being “smart enough” to develop its own AI while claiming to be capable of protecting user information.
This latest issue comes on the heels of Musk’s ongoing feud with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. In March, Musk sued the company, accusing it of betraying its original mission of being open-sourced and developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of humanity.
Since then, Musk has launched his own rival AI company, xAI, and a ChatGPT alternative called Grok. xAI raised $6 billion in its series B fundraising round, and Musk was accused of using Tesla data to help sell it to potential investors .
The partnership between Apple and OpenAI is set to roll out later this year, with users being able to access ChatGPT features for free without creating an account. Paid subscribers to ChatGPT will have the option to link their accounts and access premium features.
