The Riigikogu, or the Estonian Parliament, on Wednesday passed a resolution supporting the adoption of nuclear energy in the country. The decision comes after a thorough analysis by the Nuclear Energy Working Group, which concluded that the implementation of nuclear power in Estonia is feasible.
The resolution outlines several steps to be taken, including the drafting of the Nuclear Energy and Safety Act, updating existing legislation, and establishing a regulatory institution to oversee the safe use of nuclear energy and the development of sectoral competencies.
The National Development Plan of the Energy Sector Until 2035 will also address the impacts of nuclear energy adoption to ensure a secure energy supply during the transition to climate-neutral energy production.
Proponents of the resolution highlight the numerous advantages of nuclear power, such as providing a stable generation capacity to balance fluctuations in renewable energy, helping Estonia reach its climate neutrality target, ensuring long-term affordable electricity prices, promoting research and development, and creating local jobs.

However, the resolution does not grant the right to build a nuclear power plant in Estonia. The regulatory framework will ensure that risks related to national security, financing, and ownership are thoroughly assessed before any further steps are taken.
The vote saw 41 members of the Riigikogu in favor of the resolution, while 25 voted against it, with two abstentions.
