It appears that OpenAI’s popular large language model ChatGPT has already peaked.
Traffic for the chatbot saw a slowdown for the first time since it was released into the wild in late November last year. Research firm Similarweb reported a 9.7% drop in worldwide traffic from May to June, with unique visitors falling 5.7%. Users also spent less time talking to the world’s most in-demand chatbot by 8.5%.
But while it’s all downward red arrows for these metrics, ChatGPT still enjoys a big lead among its competitors at 1.5 billion visits per month, with only Microsoft-backed and OpenAI-powered Bing coming at a close second.

Additionally, worldwide traffic for the four AI models tracked by Similarweb — namely Microsoft’s Bing, Google’s Bard, and Character AI — all saw a similar drop in June.
“ChatGPT no longer looks like it will keep growing until it’s the most-trafficked website in the world,” Similarweb Senior Insights Manager David Carr wrote in their blog post. “In other words, Google is in no danger of being eclipsed by the OpenAI tech demo site that turned into a cultural phenomenon.”
The drop likely indicates that the novelty is beginning to wear off as artificial intelligence, particularly generative artificial intelligence models, has become more widely recognized and used in different ways through different applications.
