Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith traded barbs this week after Carney mocked Smith’s appearances on US conservative media.
At a weekend rally in Victoria, Carney joked about Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s efforts to address US tariffs on Canadian goods through Fox News appearances.
“We’re sending Doug Ford on to Fox News to show them that we’re not messing around up here,” Carney told supporters. “And we’re going to send Danielle next… well, no, maybe we won’t. We won’t send Danielle. That’s a bad idea.”
Smith fired back at an Edmonton news conference on Monday, accusing Carney of having issues with strong conservative women.

“I’ve noticed this with progressive men, how much they talk about how much they support women until they meet a strong, conservative woman,” Smith said. “The attitude is ‘sit down and shut up.’ Well, I don’t shut up.”
The relationship between the two has deteriorated since Carney was sworn in as prime minister last month. Smith has been outspoken about Liberal policies, particularly regarding oil and gas emissions caps, and previously threatened a “national unity crisis” if her demands aren’t met.
