IAMGOLD (TSX: IMG) announced this morning that work has stopped at its Rosebel Gold Mine operation in Suriname, South America after seven personnel were found to be infected with COVID-19. Work stopped was a result of union resistance to certain measures required.
The individuals found to be diagnosed with the virus have been quarantined and are currently receiving medical care, with all areas now being disinfected and contact tracing taking place. Additional measures put in place, including social distancing, has resulted from pushback from the workers union.
As a result, the union is using the basis of social distancing as a basis for work stoppage. Production at the Rosebel Gold Mine as a result are suspended until the “appropriate controls are in place.” A specific timeline for resumption has not been provided.
