IATA Expected to Launch Covid-19 Travel Pass by March

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently announced that it will launch its official Covid-19 travel pass by March, which will allow travellers to display their proof of vaccine or Covid-19 test results in an effort to boost air travel amid the pandemic.

The latest measure, called the IATA Travel Pass, will provide airlines, passengers, and governments streamlined access to “secure identification,” “accurate information,” and “verified data” that coincides with current pandemic restrictions. The program is already underway at Singapore Airlines, with an additional 20 airlines currently in the testing phase of the app. The IATA anticipates to have the Travel Pass ready for full-scale usage by the end of March, as more companies are set to start using it over the next several months.

The IATA also brought attention to rising concerns regarding the continuing global pandemic restrictions, many of which have heavily impacted airlines. The organization’s chief economist warned that it will likely take longer than initially expected for airline companies to cease burning cash and begin a financial rebound.

IATA’s Travel Pass unveiling comes amid a recent Europol warning, which alleges that criminals have been selling falsified Covid-19 test results to travellers, allowing them to bypass pandemic restrictions.
