“Gmail is here to stay,” Gmail posted on X Thursday evening after fake news about Google’s (Nasdaq: GOOG) email service “sunsetting” spread on Elon Musk’s social media platform.
The fake news is a purported screenshot of an email announcement sent through Google Analytics claiming that Gmail would be shut down by August 1, 2024.
“We are reaching out to share an important update about Gmail,” the fake email said. “After years of connecting millions worldwide, enabling seamless communication, and fostering countless connections, the journey of Gmail is coming to a close. As of August 1, 2024, Gmail will officially be sunsetted, marking the end of its service.”
The post was picked up by several X users including X Product Lead Chris Bakke, who joked that he’s SVP of Product at Google and mistook instructions to fire the Gemini team. The joke could be Bakke taking a swipe at Google after its artificial intelligence model generated racially diverse Nazis.
Gizmodo points out that the email screenshot appears to be a photoshopped version of the 2023 email that notified users that the Gmail Basic HTML view will be disabled in January this year.
